Decarbonising Industry and Transport

Sustainable fuels production for Australia and the world.

At the Port Augusta Green Energy Hub, South Australia Solar Fuels (SASF) will combine world-leading Australian technology and global expertise to produce sustainable fuels. Solar fuels offer a scalable solution to unlock decarbonisation for multiple industries, including shipping and aviation for the transport sector.

The world-first project will create highly skilled, local jobs and will support Australia’s ambition to become a clean energy superpower, using renewables to produce green fuel.

Decarbonising Fuels for Shipping and Aviation

As the world moves to a net zero future, transport that is difficult to power directly by renewable electricity and batteries need low carbon alternatives to fossil fuels. Sustainable shipping and aviation fuel produced using renewable energy are ideal replacements, requiring little to no upgrades to existing equipment and infrastructure.

SASF is being developed to meet this growing demand and give the domestic industry access to low-cost, locally-made, sustainable fuels such as methanol and other hydrogen-based e-fuels.

Decarbonising Industrial Processes and Manufacturing

The process used to produce green methanol for shipping can also be applied to produce other sustainable fuels and chemicals for industrial processes and manufacturing.

This provides a pathway to apply proven technologies to solve decarbonisation challenges now and into the future to support industry over the long-term.

The Project

The first-of-its-kind project uses renewable energy to power the production of 7,500 tpa of sustainable methanol. That is enough to fuel year-round operations for:
